10 Survival Tips for Your First Week Back to School

Summer vacation is over and school is here yet again! Some people love being back at school and starting a new chapter. They get to see their friends, get involved in sports or other activities, know they’re getting closer to becoming a senior, or better yet, actually starting their senior year! But for many it is not welcome at all, and they’d rather not be there. It can be so hard getting back into the swing of things. And actually, the same can also be true for those who do like it. School can be daunting, stressful (not to mention awkward) for a number of reasons, and your first week back is usually full of new things to get use to. Here are some tips to help you survive it:

  1. Look Your Best: When you look your best, you feel your best! That’s what all that back to school shopping was about, right? School often looks like a fashion show the first week or two, and I believe it is for this reason of boosting their self-confidence and image to others, that students do it. Even if you’re not fashion-forward, just looking your best and being well groomed will give you the confidence you need.

  2. Stay Organized: Get a planner or use your phone to keep track of important dates, assignments, and commitments. This will help you manage your time effectively and avoid feeling overwhelmed.

  3. Explore Your School: Take some time to familiarize yourself with the school layout, especially if you are new to it. Even if you have always went to the same school, your classes might be in new locations you aren’t familiar with. Locate your classes (so you’re not tardy), the library, cafeteria, and other important places. This will make it easier for you to navigate the school during the hectic first week (and you know those hallways are nothing but a traffic jam and a trap to getting where you need to be).

  4. Don’t Freak Out Over Your Schedule: Your class schedule will likely change during the first week or two. You will at times be in a class you don’t want, so just try to be patient until you can see the counselor and ask to be moved elsewhere. Schedule changes are normal and it can take up to three weeks even before it is all straightened out. So try not to stress!

  5. Make Friends: High school can be intimidating, but remember that everyone is likely feeling the same way. Sure, you probably have your circle of friends already, but introduce yourself to new classmates and strike up conversations with them. Join clubs or extracurricular activities to meet people who share similar interests with you.

  6. Ask for Help: Don't hesitate to ask for help when needed. Teachers, guidance counselors, and older students are generally happy to assist you. If you're struggling with a particular subject or task, seek guidance to ensure you stay on top of your assignments.

  7. Establish a Routine: Set a routine for yourself, including waking up and going to bed at consistent times, eating well-balanced meals, and dedicating specific time for homework and studying. Having a routine will help you stay focused and feel more organized.

  8. Take Care of Yourself: Pay attention to your physical and mental well-being. Get enough sleep, eat nutritious meals, and take breaks when needed. Engage in activities that help you relax, such as hobbies, exercise, or spending time with friends.

  9. Embrace Opportunities: Be open to new experiences and opportunities during your first week. Think about different clubs or extracurricular activities you can get involved in. Participate actively in class discussions. You might even get put in a class that you can’t get out of, so see if it is an opportunity to learn something new. And hey, you might even really enjoy it!

  10. Stay Positive: High school can be challenging, but maintaining a positive attitude will make it easier to overcome obstacles. Surround yourself with supportive friends, stay focused on your goals, and remember that it's okay to ask for help when needed.

Remember, the first week might feel overwhelming, but you will gradually adjust. Oh, and be nice and patient with your teachers! They are under a lot of stress too!
